Student Growth Insights: Teacher Guide
The Student Growth Insights (SGI) feature is designed to help you quickly understand how your students are learning, participating, and progressing. It brings together information from AI-powered conversations and classroom assessments, presenting you with concise summaries, engagement data, and actionable insights.
What You’ll See on the SGI Page
Each SGI dashboard is organized into panels that make it easy to scan and interpret student learning patterns:
-
Key Discussion Themes
- Highlights the main academic topics students are talking about.
- Example: “Students are focused on graphing linear equations and understanding slope-intercept form.”
-
Common Questions
- Shows recurring questions or areas of confusion across your class.
- Example: “Many students are asking about the difference between point-plotting and equation-based graphing.”
-
Student Interests
- Surfaces what captures students’ curiosity—often connections to real-world topics or personal interests.
- Example: “Students are linking photosynthesis to biomimicry and engineering applications.”
-
Student Engagement
- Provides an overview of how actively students are participating.
- At both class level and individual level, you’ll see:
- Number of conversations
- Average length of conversations
- Completion rates (for Teaching Aide assignments)
- Example: “Engagement varies; some students dive deeply into problem-solving, while others start with off-topic testing before focusing.”
-
Assessment Summary
- Combines results from recent assessments to show class strengths and areas for growth.
- Includes a short text summary and a bar chart showing average scores (converted to percentages).
- Example: “Students are strong in labeling scientific diagrams but need more support explaining reasoning in open-ended responses.”
Filtering and Time Periods
- You can filter insights by time range (e.g., last week, last month).
- When you adjust the filter, the system regenerates summaries so you only see conversations and assessments from that time window.
- This helps you spot short-term trends and compare them with long-term progress.
How Summaries Are Generated
- Conversation Summaries condense individual student–AI chats into a few sentences.
- Meta-Summaries then combine multiple conversations (for a class or a single student) to identify themes, questions, interests, and engagement patterns.
- Assessment Summaries use assignment-level reports to highlight strengths and opportunities.
- All summaries are generated in structured formats (JSON) behind the scenes but displayed as plain text for you.
Using Growth Insights in Practice
Here are some ways you might use SGI in your teaching:
-
Lesson Planning:
If many students are struggling with graphing linear functions, you might plan a reteach or add visual supports. -
Targeted Support:
If a student shows consistent medium engagement but frequent off-task behavior, you can plan one-on-one check-ins. -
Personalized Content:
Use the “Create Content” button to auto-generate rubrics, lesson plans, or slides that already incorporate student discussion and assessment insights. -
Engagement Monitoring:
Track whether interventions (like new classroom routines or scaffolds) increase participation and focus.
Teacher Feedback and Accuracy
- There will be a Feedback button next to the “Generate Insights” tool.
- You’ll be able to rate summaries (1–5 scale for accuracy and usefulness) and flag if anything is missing or incorrect.
- Your feedback is saved alongside the summary and linked conversation, helping improve future versions.
Student View (Coming Soon)
- Students will be able to see a simplified version of their own SGI under “My Learning Progress.”
- This will include motivational badges (like “On-Time Streaks” or “Super Chatter”) and personalized growth summaries.
Key Takeaways
- SGI saves you time by summarizing conversations and assessments into digestible insights.
- You stay in control with filters, feedback tools, and the ability to generate instructional content directly from insights.
- Students benefit too, through improved personalization and clear visibility into their own progress.
